If your child has a broken bone, your first stop might be at one of our Wolfson Children's ERs.

Specialized Care for Growing Bones

When a break occurs, it's important to be treated by a pediatric orthopedic specialist trained to treat children's developing bones. Why? Because kids have areas of cartilage in their bones, called growth plates, that continue to expand until adulthood. If they don't heal correctly, there can be long-term problems.

Treating Breaks

  • The most common broken bones in children requiring surgery are broken elbows, wrists, femurs and tibias. Sometimes, surgery involves stabilizing the broken bones with metal devices with plates and screws, pins or rods.
  • Not all broken bones require surgery so Wolfson Children's specialists provide non-operative management as well. This may include casting or splinting.

Sports Injuries

Other than fractures, the most common sports injuries in middle and high schoolers are torn ACLs and dislocated kneecap. Our specialists work as a team to care for these and other sports injuries, with the goal of safely returning your child to sports and daily activities and helping prevent re-injury.

Repairing Spine Curvatures and Defects 

Our Wolfson Children's Spine Center offers early diagnosis, treatment and long-term management for a variety of orthopedic spine disorders including curvatures of the spine caused by scoliosis and kyphosis.

Orthopedic Surgery

Treating children is highly specialized since little bodies are still growing. That's why our orthopedic surgeons from Nemours Children's Health, Jacksonville have the highest level of pediatric orthopedic training in the area. They use the most advanced technology available in our state-of-the-art operating suites.

Pediatric Orthotics Program

Children with conditions like scoliosis, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, musculoskeletal abnormalities and sports-related injuries often use braces, splints and prosthetics to increase mobility and support. Pediatric orthotic and prosthetic specialists provide fittings, adjustments and follow-up modifications to this equipment that not only helps children heal, but also allows them to gain more function and enjoy a better quality of life. Relief from Spasticity 

Some orthopedic disorders are caused by or related to a higher-than-normal degree of muscle rigidity, or spasticity, that limits limb function. Our Cerebral Palsy and Spasticity Center brings together a team of diverse specialists to evaluate and treat kids with spasticity. They collaborate to make sure every aspect of your child's condition is cared for.
